Lack of photo variety!

That time of year again when all the mixing work starts piling up and the deadlines get shorter and shorter. Spent the last 2 months working on a lot of local pop / band mixes and barely left my gaff except for dinner... and there's only so many photos you can upload from a desk!

Highlights of the work include a new track for local artist Josie Ho (extremely happy with that mix; fast punky rock which stretched my ProTools abilities a fair amount), a quick & dirty techno/fidget mix job for DJ Blink out in Kuala Lumpur ... at 12 tracks tall that was probably the smallest project I've worked on in years! Finally (although still far from completed and the deadline is Nov 11th) is a semi-remix semi-collaborative project with UK house legend Jon DaSilva.

some quick iPhone stuff

Recently got a 32GB iPhone 3GS last week and loving it for the most part – apart from Apple's irritating 'no apps running in the background' and 'no you cannot browse the file system' and my mobile provider locking out tethering... stupidity, as all of these can be activated by jailbreaking the phone.

Anyway, I digress. I'm not about to jailbreak (yet) so for the time-being here's a quick round-up of what I picked up from the App Store. I'm not going to provide links, just open the store on your phone and search for them. Some free, all cheap.

SunVox - Awesome music production tool in that oldskool vertical tracker stylee. Powerful enough not to piss me off and deep enough to generate some really thick sounds. Bonus points for 32bit (floating) WAV file export over WiFi. One thumb down for being slow on the OS3.1 update.

FiRe - My friends at AudioFile Engineering (creators of the brilliant Wave Editor) have made *the* best recording device for the iPhone. I've already been walking the streets of Hong Kong picking up hookers ambient sound effects. Think of this like a portable DAT with built in Mic. Bonus points for overdub! One thumb down for Apple not adding a 3.5mm line-in socket to compliment the 3.5mm headphone jack.

TouchOSC - Not essential but certainly limitless in application. I should also make an honorable mention for the similar if yet open source i.e: *butt ugly* program mrmr. For those of you into music production who haven't jumped on board the OSC wagon, what are you waiting for. It's the future of device communication.

AutoStitch, NightShot and Mill Colour - Let's be honest, the iPhone camera is a bit shit especially when compared to the hardware offered on some Sony handsets. However, these three programs actually make images useable and the results are definitely web ready. Perhaps not print ready but hell, this is a phone after all.

iCab Mobile - The best web browser for iPhone to date. Tabbed browsing, true security & anonymity not to mention very good file download (and export) functionality. Try downloading an MP3 via http on Mobile Safari and getting it over to your desktop. No way José... but with iCab, no problem. Numerous other uses I'm sure.

Modern Warfare: Sandstorm - You like Call of Duty Modern Warfare? Nuff said. Ten levels of rocking FPS action and *the* best control interface any iPhone game has to offer. One thumb down for not adding mid-level saves! Just make sure you hit a checkpoint before quitting the game otherwise you're starting again. I guess a second thumb down for using 'generic middle eastern terrorist' as the foe, but what the hell... it's either that or aliens from outer space. Third thumb down for giving me motion sickness on the bus yesterday.

Jaadu VNC - Pretty limited audience, but I use remote desktop a lot here at the studio and also to make sure things are running as planned at the bar (without actually having to *go* to the bar) so this fully featured VNC aplication comes in very handy. Not cheap – US$25 is a bit of stretch for a phone application – but it's already saved me one round trip in a taxi.

Koredoko - Leveraging iPhone data location service and shows you where you took your photos... pinpointing them on a Google Maps based interface. Very simple and accurate (in Hong Kong at least) to within about 10~100m. Returns time, date, lat and long info for each photo as you scroll through the Camera Roll.

I also downloaded and use the official FaceBook, Skype and Tweetdeck programs, plus an interesting instant messenger program called Mobile Linked (which is good although seems a bit buggy with ichat / aim login... every other service is fine though).

If you've found anything solid, add the application name into the comments section of this post.
